During the Art and Science Exhibition at the ISMB/ECBB2013; Evolution of a Hybrid by Koen Vanmechelen, Jan Aerts, Ryo Sakai, Peter Koning and Yves Moreau won the Best Artwork award. The annual international conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB) is the major meeting of the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). Over the past twenty years the ISMB conference has grown to become the world's largest bioinformatics/computational biology conference, and ISMB/ECCB 2013 is the year's most important computational biology event globally.

At the Ars Electronica Festival 2013 in Linz, artist Koen Vanmechelen receives the Golden Nica for his 'Cosmopolitan Chicken Project'. This award, also known as the Oscar of Media Art, is the most prestigious international award in the field of contemporary media art. The prize consists of 10,000 euros and a gilt nike-statue.
The international jury unanimously chose Vanmechelen out of nearly 600 candidates in the category 'Hybrid Art'. The jury report states: "In this project Vanmechelen investigates in a transdisciplinary way universal themes like biocultural diversity and identity. Starting from the chicken he forges art, science and technology into a highly individualistic and unique oeuvre."
